Steven Silverleaf grew up between New York City, Athens Greece, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee during the 1970s where he studied painting and drawing. He was active in the local art, poetry, and experimental theatre scene in Milwaukee.
He returned to North Carolina in 1980, living in the mountains and on the coast, before returning to the “Triangle” area (Durham) in 1990. He opened a visual arts gallery that showcased several under-appreciated artist populations and began a number of rich and rewarding collaborations with artists and arts organizations of different disciplines.
Steven has been an active member of many converging art communities, including dance, experimental theatre, poetry, and pop-up installations. He has worked as a consultant and curated countless arts events. In 2004 he began spending time between his Carrboro,NC studio and Brooklyn’s Bushwick (NYC) emerging art scene. In 2010, he joined the board of Gaspard&Dancers where he contributed valuable time and constructed sets for the company’s dance works. Currently, he is spending his time between his Carrboro studio and Sapporo Japan working on projects that are international in vision and scope.
